Irene Loizidou Nicolaidou has been a registered lawyer since 2000, with primary involvement in corporate law for fifteen years. In 2015, she was appointed Commissioner for Personal Data Protection of Cyprus, a position she held for ten years. During her tenure, she was elected Vice-Chair of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), playing a key role in shaping data protection policy at the European Union level.
At the same time, she delivered lectures and awareness initiatives to diverse audiences, including schools, universities, and professional bodies, promoting a culture of privacy, transparency, and accountability across all sectors of society. In 2020, she was appointed Information Commissioner of Cyprus, with responsibility for overseeing and monitoring public administration regarding access to information it holds.
Her public service career began earlier, in 2001, when she was elected Municipal Councillor in the Municipality of Engomi, serving three consecutive terms. In this capacity, she was a full member of the Cypriot delegation to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, where she was twice elected Vice-Chair of the Monitoring Committee. She also chaired several committees within the Municipality of Engomi.
Between 2011 and for four years, she served as President of the Business Professional Women (BPW) Kyrenia, promoting women’s entrepreneurship. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and an MBA from the Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM).
Additionally, she holds a Diploma in Professional Journalism from the Professional Journalist Workshop in Athens and is a Certified Mediator accredited by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR).
